Why USDA Organic Certification Matters to Sēkwl

When I launched Sēkwl, I knew we should do things differently.

Not “different” in the startup buzzword sense. And not “different” because we slapped mushrooms into sparkling water and called it innovation.

Why USDA Organic Certification Matters for Functional Mushroom Beverages

We wanted to build something thoughtful. Intentional. Transparent. A beverage company that actually gave a damn about what went into the can and how the company operated behind the scenes.

That’s a big reason why earning USDA Organic Certification means so much to us. And it’s probably one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of from our first year.

Because, let me tell you, getting certified organic isn’t easy. Or cheap. ESPECIALLY for a startup.

There’s this misconception that organic is just a sticker or a marketing claim.

It’s not.

How Sēkwl Earned USDA Organic Certification for Its Adaptogenic Sparkling Waters

The certification process is intense. There are audits, sourcing reviews, production documentation, sanitation standards, ingredient tracing, handling requirements, recordkeeping systems… all before you get approved.

Every ingredient matters.
Every supplier matters.
Every process matters.

And for us, that was the point.

From day one, I had a vision for Sēkwl centered around building beverages made with ingredients we genuinely believed in – Functional mushrooms. Organic botanicals. No caffeine. No added sugar. And no weird synthetic ingredients hiding behind vague labels. Just clean, intentional beverages crafted in-house.

That sounds simple when you write it in one sentence. It’s a lot harder in real life.

Especially in today’s food and beverage world, where “natural,” “clean,” and “healthy” can mean almost anything depending on who’s selling it.

Organic Functional Mushroom Drinks Made with Transparency, Sustainability, and Clean Ingredients

That’s part of why organic certification matters so much to us. It creates accountability.

It’s third-party verification that says:
“No, really. We actually did the work.”

And look, I’m not saying organic automatically makes something perfect. The food system is complicated. Sustainability is complicated. Consumer products are complicated.

But we do believe consumers deserve transparency.
We believe ingredients matter.
We believe sourcing matters.
And we believe companies should be willing to prove the claims they make.

That’s why this certification felt important.

For me, that deeply matters, and having our organic craft seltzers certified as USDA Organic was and is deeply personal.

Sēkwl was never intended to become another trendy wellness brand chasing whatever ingredient was hot on TikTok this month. The vision was always to create something more grounded — beverages that support balance, focus, calm, recovery, and intentional daily rituals without pretending to be magic cures or wellness shortcuts.

Just products people can feel good about drinking every day.

And if we were going to ask customers to trust us, we felt like we needed to earn that trust.

That’s what USDA Organic represents to us.

It’s trust.
It’s transparency.
It’s accountability.
And honestly, it’s a reflection of the kind of company we’re trying to build.

We’re still small.
We’re still learning.
We’re still improving things constantly.

But this certification felt like an important milestone because it validated the standards we set for ourselves long before our first can ever hit a shelf.

And in a world where a lot of brands overpromise, greenwash, and say whatever sounds good in marketing copy… we’re trying really hard to stay grounded in honesty.

Even when it’s messy.
Even when it’s expensive.
Even when it would be easier not to.

That’s the journey we’re on.

And I’m really grateful you’re on it with us.
