Responsibility at Sēkwl

We know - you here every day about how companies are "becoming green." Very sadly, there is a lot of greenwashing that takes place. As a consumer product company, we absolutely have an impact. We buy materials, we operate a location, we ship products.

All of that is true, and... there are ways to be a better business, to significantly minimize environmental footprint, to strengthen community impact, and to leave the world better than we found it.

We believe that business can, and must, do better and we are on a mission to prove it is possible.

We look out for our sphere of influence. We're not here to make false promises, so take a look at some of our initiatives below to reduce our impact and make the world a better place. We aren't perfect, and we won't always get it right. Our commitment is to be transparent about the good, the bad, and the ugly.

We just launched in May of 2025, but we plan to publish an impact report annually after our first year of operations. Our ask is to help hold us accountable as we collectively work to show that better business is possible!

Minimizing Waste

Recycling

Our municipality doesn't offer recycling at our location, yet we recycle anyway. We have local partnerships with SustainAbility to recycle some materials, Ridwell for some items, and then Terracycle for hard to recycle items that we must have like latex gloves, face masks, and other muiti-layer packaging.

Shrink Wrap Free Pallets

We've met with many can manufacturers and selected a partner that shares our commitment to the planet. Our partner ships our cans on reusable pallets of, wrapped with cardboard instead of stretch plastic, minimizing our plastic use. We then return all pallets and packing items to them for re-use.

Right-Sized Boxes

Custom shipping boxes sized perfectly for our cans mean no air-fill poly bags or crinkled up paper, and less volume and thus emissions during shipping. We searched high and low for the right partner and are proud to have found a woman-owned business that uses only post-consumer recycled materials for our shipping boxes.

Composting

All of those Sēkwl flavors that you know and love come from plants, spices, and fruit! We have compost on-site for all of the botanicals used to create our flavor extracts, creating nutrient rich soil amendments instead of landfill waste.

Global Ingredients, Responsibly Sourced

Instead of artificial or natural flavors sourced from a flavor company, we extract all our own flavors in-house directly from plant materials.

These plants come from all over the world, and we only order certified organic items from reputable companies.

Made in Colorado

While our ingredients come from all around the world (there's not much cardamom, grapefruit or cacao grown in Colorado), we're proud to extract our flavors, produce our syrup mixes, and can our beverages in Colorado.

We are looking to establish relationships with organic and regenerative farms here in Colorado that would like to help us grow as much as we can. Let us know if you have any ideas!

Eco-friendly packing & Shipping

Recycled Aluminum Cans, No Plastic Sleeve

It's a given that aluminum cans can be recycled, so that's bare minimum.

Our cans are made of 65% recycled aluminum, and our can partner is working each year to increase this amount.

We use printed cans to ensure easy recycling. So many new beverages use cans with shrink-wrapped plastic sleeves. In some places, if the consumer doesn't remove the sleeve the can won't be recycled at all.

100% Recycled Can Holders

For eco-conscious can holders, there are basically two options, 100% recycled plastic rings or natural plant fiber based rings.

We selected the 100% recycled plastic rings because they're easier to remove, create demand for recycled plastic, and are made in the US, reducing our shipping footprint.

As a side benefit, their bright colors also match our brand!

Recycled Cardboard Boxes

You'll often see something like "Recyclable Cardboard" touting that a box is a green solution.

However, actually using a box made with recycled carboard is the best solution. Our boxes are made using 100% recycled cardboard with 95% post-consumer.

Paper based packing tape

Paper-based packing tape keeps more plastic out of the landfill and makes it easier to recycle our shipping boxes... plus it's sturdier, leading to fewer damaged shipments.

Ground Shipping

Shipping cases of water means pretty heavy packages, which means increased carbon emissions from shipping.

To minimize this impact, we only offer ground shipping for our products.

Better business

We are just getting started on our path to proving that business can be better. We don't see it as a choice, but an imperative for all business owners. We can operate a successful business, and also know that while cheaper supplies and ingredients are available, that the Earth and all life that inhabits this beautiful planet, are worth the extra few cents.
